In the MD/DC/PA area, the average cost of a wedding is now in the $20,000 range. When you calculate that figure into a 4 or 5 hour event, that's roughly $4,000-$5,000 per hour!  When spending that much on one day, you certainly want to get the best possible value for your money.  After your caterer serves drinks and appetizers during your cocktail, and after your guest enjoy their tasty meal, you leave 2-3 hours of your reception in the hands of your disc jockey.  While most couples will spend 1/20th (or less) of their budget on entertainment, you entrust that entertainer with half of your "wedding investment".  If your DJ can't get people up and dancing, what will your photographer and videographer do?  How will you feel if your guests leave after the meal because they are not interested in the music?

Not all wedding vendors are created equal, which is the reason the wedding industry has a large range of rates for the services each vendor provides.  When a couple asks me why my rates are slightly higher (or lower) than my competitor, I try to educate them on what goes in to that price.  On average, a 4 or 5 hour event actually consumes about 20 hours of my time in addition to the other business costs every professional DJ incurs.
